Grammar (P.Simple vs P.Continuous)

PRESENT SIMPLE VS PRESENT CONTINUOUS IN FUTURE:

The "present continuous" is used to refer to plans or agreements on future events.
More than one person is involved in them, it has been given a certain degree of preparation, (things that we have already arranged to do in the future), for example:
  • I've got my ticket. I'm leaving on Thursday.
  • I'm seeing Julie at 5 and then I'm having dinner with Simon.

ATTENTION: If the future event has a fixed schedule or is programmed, it uses the "simple present".

In many situations when we talk about future plans we can use either the present continuous or the 'going to' future. However, when we use the present continuous, there is more of a suggestion that an arrangement has already been made.
  • I'm going to see him./I'm seeing him.
  • I'm going to do it./I'm doing it.

The "present simple" is used to make statements about future events, which are timetabled,  as a schedule or calendar, for example:
  • The plane arrives at 18.00 tomorrow.
  • The shop opens at 9.30.

DIFFERENCES:
a. We're having a staff meeting next Monday = punctual action. (P.C.)
b. We have a staff meeting every Monday. (P.S.)
